Summer Reading

Madeline and Marcella love to read and be read to!  We make weekly trips to the Frisco library and check out tons of books! Both girls participated in the summer reading program. Madeline read 10 books all by herself and of course, I read Marcella’s to her. They both won a bunch of prizes and a certificate signed by our Governor Rick Perry! I was so proud of Madeline~ I loved the library as a child…especially in summertime! I remember it being air conditioned very well and it felt great to go in there on hot days with my hair still wet from our swimming pool. Good memories…ones that I want the girls to have, too!

So, Madeline has graduated up to chapter books! She is still reading her Biscuit  and Level 1 books, but I still read to her every night. It is a special time for us and always has been. She is in love with American Girl “Kit Kittredge”. We have started reading her chapter books. I wasn’t sure if she would enjoy them , seeing as they have very few pictures…..oh my, she loves them!!! Now she is learning about Kit and her life during The Depression. Amazing. We have also started reading the Boxcar Children series. Next up, Nancy Drew and Little House. We are buying a family set of Little House for Christmas this year. I hope she loves them as much as I did. You might remember the girls’ bookshelf? Al built it for me the year we were married to hold my cookbooks. It now houses children’s books and last weekend Al painted it for me. I think it looks great! We stack our library books on top!!

I was a huge library fan growing up. I think its crucial to get to know your library and read lots of books. I credit my high SAT score to being well-read. Keep it up! =)

If you are buying the LHOTP series, you may want to buy it used. teh new versions are all abridged and have photos ont eh front covers instead of Garth Williams drawings. The publisher is no longer printing the unabridged versions.
I spent the last two years buying up alkl the unabridged copies of the othe LHOTP series to go with the set I got for Christmas when I was 7. they aren't written by Laura, but are written about her great-grandmother, grandmother, mom and daughter.
